Saké

Saké entertained herself this morning by playing in a towel. This picture was taken before she rolled herself up completely like a cocoon.

Saké

I also really love Sushi's little worm-like tail on the far right of the picture.

Pants Party

Little known fact: pants make an excellent place to hang out.

Pillows Aren't Just for Napping

The girls spent some time playing on the bed before I put clean sheets on the other night. They seemed pretty content.

Such a face...

Fit Club

Ah, January. The time when stores have tons of workout equipment on sale and the area gyms are all stuffed with people trying to fulfill new year's resolutions.

Saké was happy to help me pack my running clothes so I too can stay in shape.

Looking demure...

That face!

She should be a rat model.

Clothes Party

As I mentioned yesterday, the girls spend a lot of time playing in the laundry. I've yet to find an easier way to entertain them then simply filling a basket with clothes. They happily spend ages climbing, burrowing, and napping before showing any inclination to leave the basket.

Is that a rat?

That looks like a tail.

Definitely a nose...

Aha! That is definitely a Sushi.

Play Time

The other night I decided to let the girls out while I was getting ready for bed. I expected them to play in the bathroom, but I didn't expect them spend all of their time playing on the counter top while I was washing my face and brushing my teeth.

The girls enjoyed themselves:

Play Time

Rats are not the easiest pets I've had. Chickens are easier, as are fish. Rats need stimulation and attention, in addition to plenty of play time.

Last night though, half frozen from an evening out in the cold taking care of horses and walking dogs, it occurred to me that rats are very pleasant pets to care for. All I had to do was flip over a laundry basket, put the rats on the bed, and they were good for an hour of burrowing, digging, and exploring.

Box Rats

You really can order anything from Amazon!

Sushi checks out the view.

Saké pokes her nose out...
...and then climbs underneath her sister.

Sushi Climbs Mount Laundry

The other night the girls were out and I pushed a basket of their clean bedding over, to give them something to explore. Saké was unimpressed but Sushi dove right in.

Initially I couldn't find her, but then I saw this:

That looks suspiciously like a tail...
She then pulled her tail in and disappeared for a few moments, surfacing later at the top of the pile.

Success!

Sushi realizes she's been sighted...

...And back down into the towels!

Tube Rats

The girls never seem to tire of playing in/with their old packing tube.

I love how easily entertained they are.

Saké the Burrower

Saké is most active in the mornings, and as a result I am never sure what to expect when I wake up. Yesterday she completely pulled up the towel that lines the bottom of their cage and burrowed inside of it. She does this periodically. Generally she hides and then pokes her head out to surprise whoever might be near (usually Penelope).

Sushi the Explorer

I was laying on the bed the other day reading, while the rats were loose next to me. Saké spent most of her time hanging out in a cardboard tube, but Sushi took the opportunity to run all over. She raced from one end of the bed to the other, bouncing off the storage trunk that sits at the foot, and back onto the bed. Then I felt a bit of pressure on one of my lower legs, as Sushi used me as a trampoline to propel herself onto the dresser, about 15-18 inches away.

Once on the dresser, she happily raced around, sticking her face into every nook and cranny.

Saké seemed unimpressed with her sister's antics.

Play Time

I love how easily entertained rats are.  Last night I put a couple of big towels and a shoe box on the bed and then spent the next 45 minutes reading while the girls played.

Peeking out....

Sushi's nose

Hanging out in the shoebox.

Whatcha Doing?

It isn't always easy to get a few minutes to yourself to read.

Saké checks out the New Yorker.

Who knew rats cared about the Rwandan cycling team?

All You Need are Towels

It takes very little to entertain the girls. Last night it was simply a basket of towels.

Sushi.

It's hard to be little when your fat sister sits on you.

Saké's face, Sushi's tail.

Sisters.

Saké has to be the cutest rat of all time. Also, note the pea shells. Cute, but messy.

Boxing

I know it's been said before, but sometimes all you need is a good box.
